Netflix continues to roll onto media platforms in high definition as the movie rental giant makes HD streaming available via TiVo DVRs, the companies announced Monday.
Netflix and TiVo subscribers using a TiVo Series3, TiVo HD or TiVo HD XL DVR can access Netflix’s 12,000-title standard-definition streaming library, along with its nearly 300-title HD streaming library. The company expects the collections to grow over the next few weeks.
“With so much talk focusing on the economy these days, this partnership makes more sense than ever because it brings people more movies at home, offering substantially more entertainment options than cable or satellite,” Tara Maitra, general manager/vice president of content services at TiVo Inc., said in a statement.
TiVo is the latest in a series of platforms to which Netflix has extended high-definition streaming support in the past two months. The company added Microsoft’s Xbox360 in November, followed by Samsung’s BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 and LG Electronics BD300 Blu-ray players last week.
“Netflix offers an unbeatable combination of convenience, selection and value, which now extends to TiVo customers,” Netflix Chief Marketing Officer Leslie Kilgore said in a statement.
“This partnership is a win-win-win for Netflix, TiVo and consumers alike,” she added.
This leaves Roku’s set-top Netflix Player as the only non-computer platform for which Netflix does not offer high-definition support, but there are strong indications that HD streaming is on its way. Netflix has stated that it currently does not have plans to offer HD streaming on PCs or Macs.
