Obama’s FCC Chair Selection Looms

Dec 19, 2008  •  Post A Comment

His cabinet now full, President-elect Barack Obama is readying to appoint other top administration posts, making the choice of a new Federal Communications Commission chairman imminent.
While the Obama transition team declined comment, sources close to Congress said they expect an announcement may be made as soon as Monday.
Speculation continues to focus on Julius Genachowski, who was a chief counselor for former FCC chairman Reed Hundt and subsequently an executive for Barry Diller’s IAC/Interactive.
Mr. Genachowski is currently an investor and technology strategist. He was a Harvard classmate with Mr. Obama and played a major role in the writing of the Obama campaign’s media issues platform.
Mr. Genachowski has also been mentioned as potential choice for the new White House Chief Technology Officer and he could yet get that post.
President-elect Obama on Friday named his final cabinet choices and now is turning his focus to other posts. A spokeswoman for the Obama transition office declined comment on plans to announce other positions.
As the incoming administration readies to announce its choices, independent film and TV producers on Friday urged any appointees for FCC chairman and commissioners “support principles of openness and diversity in the media.”
In a letter sent to co-chairs of the Obama transition team, Jean Prewitt, president of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, reiterated the group’s concern that FCC’s media ownership changes have hurt consumers.
“The American public has been denied the opportunity to hear from diverse voices by the patterns of ownership and content selection on the major media channels.”

  1. Broadcast media has become nothing more than a gravey train for some of the most vicious right-wing propagandists in recent memory. As far as I am concerned they can rant and rave all day long… but please, there must be a different view on things somewhere???

  2. I’m really tired of hearing how radio is so right wing dominated. The problem with liberal radio is that liberals don’t listen to talk radio. They do their broadcasting on the internet, in the majority of the newspapers, and in the majority of the news organizations. The last thing radio stations need is the fairness doctrine forcing them to air low rated talk shows from the left, when the internet is full of places for the left to do their smearing. I don’t defend a lot of the things said on some of the right wing talk shows but as long as the stations are not doing things like getting their news read by someone 500 miles away and completely abandoning local programming all together, then I say leave the stations alone. They’re having enough of a problem the way it is with this economy. We don’t need more people out of work.
