Warner Bros.’ “The Dark Knight” has sold more than 1.7 million Blu-ray copies in its first week of release, making it the best-selling Blu-ray offering in history, CNBC reported. Total standard-definition and high-definition sales are estimated at 13.5 million worldwide.
Sony Shuttering Last U.S. TV Plant
Sony is closing its Westmoreland, Pa., plant as part of a global restructuring, meaning it no longer has any television manufacturing factories in the United States, PC World reported. Sony said Tuesday it is shutting down 10% of its 57 factories worldwide and laying off 8,000 full-time staffers due to economic pressures, the magazine reported. About 560 workers will lose their jobs at the Westmoreland plant, which produces flat-panel LCD sets.
Low-End HDTVs Could Cost Big Later On
The Home Theater Specialists of America warns that low-end HDTVs could save money early by costing less, but limited warranties, poor displays and weaker processing engines associated with these sets will bite consumers in the future, CE Pro reported. The HTSA stresses that skimping on each part of the HD set compromises its value, the Web site reported.
CES Screens May Be Leaner, Greener
HDTV sets on display at January’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas will focus more on environmentally friendly setups and a larger array of thin flat-panel plasma screens, TWICE reported. But traffic and attendance are expected to be significantly down as the economy has pushed out some smaller companies looking to exhibit at the show, the magazine reported.

  1. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
