Mojo HD Officially Ceases Broadcast
A month and a half after parent company inDemand announced its cancellation, Mojo HD ended its transmissions on Dec. 1, tech blog Engadget reported. Despite the cancellation, Mojo HD original program “Three Sheets” will air a 45-minute “New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl” online at mojohd.com starting at midnight EST on Jan. 1, inDemand announced Monday.
Blockbuster Preps OnDemand via Blu-ray
Blockbuster is looking to bring its OnDemand download service to televisions via Blu-ray player sometime in the first quarter of 2009, Register Hardware reported. It isn’t known whether Blockbuster will build its own Blu-ray player or partner with a company for a firmware update, the Web site reported. Blockbuster announced a set-top box for its OnDemand service in late November, RegHardware said.
Criterion Moves Into Blu-ray
Wes Anderson’s “Bottle Rocket,” Wong Kar-Wai’s “Chungking Express,” Nicolas Roeg’s “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor” and Carol Reed’s “The Third Man” will be the first offering from the Criterion Collection in Blu-ray, expected to land in stores Dec. 19, Video Business reported. The packaging for the discs will buck Blu-ray trends and will only contain a small sticker on the shrink-wrap and a mention on the back of the case that the discs inside are Blu-ray, the publication reported.
‘Live’ Coming to HD
“Live With Regis and Kelly” is making its move to high definition in January, which Disney-ABC said was a relatively easy changeover, Broadcasting and Cable reported. “Live’s” move is an effort to spruce up the set it already has, and will add new graphics packages and an HD-ready control room, the article said. In contrast, Warner Bros. and CBS Television Distribution spent big bucks in order to build new sets and studios for shows including “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider.”
‘Yule Log’ Returns in High-Def
A Christmas classic, the burning yule log, is hitting on-demand cable systems in 1080i high-definition via inDemand, TelevisionWeek reported. Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks Video On Demand customers will be able to view a burning yule log with holiday music classics in high-definition for a holiday-themed backdrop. InDemand boasts that while the burning yule log has been a television classic starting in 1966, it has the only one in HD.
