Staff Cuts Hit NBC Entertainment

Dec 4, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The waves of staffing cutbacks at NBC Universal have hit the Universal City offices of NBC Entertainment.
Around 20 staffers will be leaving the division as part of the company-wide cutbacks at NBC Universal, a person familiar with the situation said. Approximately 15 staffers have been let go at the unit, while an additional half-dozen or so positions will be eliminated through attrition.
NBC is eliminating about 500 employees worldwide, trimming 3 percent of its labor budget. Cutbacks began earlier this week in NBC’s ad sales division and spread this morning to news and beyond. Viacom today said it would cut about 850 jobs. Both companies are contending with an economic downturn, a declining advertising market and operation softness in some businesses.
NBC’s entertainment division was already considered lean due to several past waves of cutbacks over the last decade. The cutbacks in the West Coast unit were said to be smaller than some in other parts of the company.
An NBC Universal spokeswoman declined comment.
