Fox’s Liguori ‘Pleased’ With ‘Idol’ Premiere Ratings

Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Liguori said he and other executives at Fox are breathing “a sigh of relief” in the wake of solid premiere ratings for the new season of “American Idol.”
“When you look at the broadcast environment (this season), where so many of the top shows are down, we have to be pleased with where we are,” Mr. Liguori told TelevisionWeek Wednesday. “Not satisfied, but pleased.”
Mr. Liguori was most impressed by the fact that, despite falling a bit from last year, “Idol,” still easily the most-watched show on TV, maintained its advantage over the premiere numbers for primetime’s second biggest show, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (7.4/18).
“We’ve maintained that distance and in a dominant fashion,” he said.
Mr. Liguori said Fox’s focus now is on avoiding any ratings sag midway through the series’ season. In past years, ratings have sometimes dipped in the middle of a season, but Fox executives and “Idol” producers have been working changing up the show in order to prevent such erosion.
