Genachowski Tipped as Next FCC Chair

President-elect Barack Obama may about to finally confirm that he is appointing longtime friend Julius Genachowski as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.

The Obama transition office did not immediately return calls to confirm that Mr. Genachowski’s appointment could come as early as tomorrow.
A Harvard University classmate of Mr. Obama’s, Mr. Genachowski has been seen as the favorite to replace current chairman Kevin Martin.
During the presidential campaign, Mr. Genachowski helped craft the Obama campaign’s science and technology agenda, which included a considerable amount of language on media issues.
Included in that language was support of greater diversity in media ownership and of net neutrality, a rule that would bar Internet service providers from offering favored content providers faster paths to consumer desktops.
Mr. Genachowski was a chief counselor for former FCC chairman Reed Hundt and subsequently an executive for Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActiveCorp.
He is currently an investor and technology strategist.
A public-interest group on Monday praised the choice.
“Under Julius Genachowski’s leadership, the FCC’s compass would point toward the public interest,” said Josh Silver, executive director of Free Press.
“President-elect Obama has provided a clear roadmap of his media and technology priorities,” Mr. Silver added. “We share Obama’s goals of creating a more diverse, democratic media system and providing fast, affordable, open Internet access for everyone. We greatly look forward to working with Mr. Genachowski to put the president-elect’s plan into action.
“The challenges facing the next FCC are enormous—a vast digital divide, an open Internet in jeopardy, consolidated media ownership, newsrooms in economic freefall and entrenched industries invested in maintaining the status quo,” he said. “This moment calls for bold and immediate steps to spur competition, foster innovation and breathe new life into our communications sector. With his unique blend of business and governmental experience, Genachowski promises to provide the strong leadership we need.”

  2. Harvard student Adam Wheeler “My own, brief, assessment of my character is that I am sententious, crypto-tendentious, slightly pedantic with a streak of contrarianism, a fascination with any pedagogical approach to Shakespeare, and a decent sense of humor” classic self delusion but in other ways heart wrenching

  3. Maybe if Adam Wheeler was in truth legitimate Harvard Law material, he would presumably have invented a better scam and would not have gotten un masked.
