Stringer Stresses Imperatives in CES Speech

Jan 8, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Sony Corp. Chairman-CEO Howard Stringer delivered a list of seven imperatives to consumer electronic success at Thursday morning’s keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
His seven imperatives were, in order:
—Embrace the fusion of industries.
—Adopt a service-enhanced philosophy.
—Products must be multifunctional.
—Support open technologies.
—Advance the shared experience because it is fundamentally changing society.
—Create a new value chain—such as the invention and implementation of high-definition did.
—Go green.
Mr. Stringer, who said he was delivering his third keynote address at a CES, was introduced by actor Tom Hanks, who also plugged his upcoming Sony movie “Angels and Demons.”
Mr. Hanks’ tongue was firmly in his cheek as he read his speech off a TelePrompTer. Much of his speech plugged Sony products, and at one point he read that on the set the cameras were made by Sony. Mr. Hanks then went off-script, and laughed, saying he hadn’t noticed that.
Later Mr. Stringer, referring to Mr. Hanks’ joking way of delivering his speech, deadpanned, “I took a risk. It failed.” Then he added that having Mr. Hanks introduce him was “generally speaking a plus—I think.”
Mr. Stringer was joined on stage by Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has a syndicated show coming this fall via Sony; Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, who talked about how much he likes Sony’s Blu-ray disc technology; and DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, who touted 3-D technology. Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson also joined Mr. Stringer on stage to talk about the Sony technology that will be used in the new Yankee Stadium.
Mr. Stringer’s final guest was Sony recording artist Usher, who performed a song to close the session.
