DTV Switch Bill Signed; New Date Is June 12

Feb 11, 2009  •  Post A Comment

President Barack Obama today signed legislation postponing the national digital TV transition until June 12.
“During these challenging economic times, the needs of American consumers are a top priority of my administration,” the President said in a statement.

The signing caps a month of political back-and-forth after Mr. Obama asked Congress to push back the transition from the original Feb. 17 date.
“This law, which was crafted in a bipartisan way and passed overwhelmingly in the House and Senate, ensures that our citizens will have more time to prepare for the conversion,” Mr. Obama said. “Millions of Americans, including those in our most vulnerable communities, would have been left in the dark if the conversion had gone on as planned, and this solution is an important step forward as we work to get the nation ready for digital TV.”

  1. So the approximately 40% of all stations that have already or will cease analog broadcasting on the original date of Feb. 17 tend to add even more confusion to this problem. The coupon program is probably beyond repair in that there are no more converter boxes and manufacturers indicate to ramp up production will take until May, and again will only leave a month to fix everyones reception issues. An impossible task.

  2. It’s the prepared people that bought new antennas because the old ones couldn’t pick up low powered DTV signals who have been taken advantage of. The stations that are broadcasting before the switch are not full power and many people bought antennas needlessly. Now the unprepared minority (less than 10%) of the people are getting more adantages by not having to switch. I wonder if in the future a president will be elected in a 10% landslide?
