Ion Adds ‘Border,’ ‘Guard’ to Roster

Feb 24, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Ion Television has acquired exclusive U.S. broadcast rights for “The Border” and “The Guard.”
The acquisitions include U.S. television, digital media, Internet streaming and video-on-demand rights for both original drama series, due to premiere on Ion later this year.
“The Border,” which Ion obtained from ContentFilm’s Fireworks International, follows members of the Canadian Immigration & Customs Security Unit working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The show is produced by White Pines Pictures Productions in association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
“The Guard” comes to Ion through a deal with Lionsgate. The series chronicles a Coast Guard search-and-rescue team. It is produced by Halifax Films and Brightlight Pictures.
“Ion Television’s ratings growth is based on broadening its entertainment appeal through a growing mix of strong off-net series, blockbuster theatricals, sitcoms and original content,” Brandon Burgess, chairman and CEO of Ion Media Networks, said in a statement. “‘The Guard’ and ‘The Border’ are two original dramas that will fit nicely with proven hits like ‘NCIS’ and ‘Criminal Minds’ on our schedule this fall. Our new programming chief, Leslie Glenn Chesloff, will expand on this vision with further syndicated content, originals and made-for-TV projects.”

  1. Ion… Remember your original series tend to not last long. The exception to the rule… “DOC.”
Maybe the new gal, in training, in West Palm Beach will understand this… since the current woman there doesn’t. Last year, 2 original series premiered… neither one are alive today. Monday nights are with ER and NCIS, and their Wednesdays are strictly Boston Legal. No original series stayed.
Poor programming choices again. I will not be shocked if these don’t live long.
Just maybe poor branding and programming choices might also be a reason that only “PAXSON” stations show the “network,” which really isn’t a network, since it does not show a certain percentage of the country it’s programming.
My best hope, stick these on “ION Life,” which repeats shows as much as PBS’ “create” does. I don’t want to see the prenup challenge, where the one woman cannot go down a rope properly, as 2 Paris Hilton wannabe bimbos talk about how sexy they are on that trip. I saw that 3 times so far, in the last week.

  2. EmmGee-Ohio, you must not have read the article carefully enough. Both “The Border” and “The Guard” are original shows that already air in Canada–the former on CBC Television, and the latter on Global TV. Ion is buying the U.S. rights for the shows in the same fashion CBS uses “Flashpoint” (a CTV show) on Friday nights.
Both shows are still on the air and already have more than 20 episodes produced, so Ion TV isn’t spending much money to get new [to the U.S.] programming on its behalf. They can hype these ‘new’ shows to the moon and hope people watch without much risk.

  3. Nate:
Still, how much outsourcing is US TV going to do? They probably will run it into the ground.
You know, I don’t know these shows, since Channel 22 (Global) and channel 9 (CBC) are not digital…and I have totally made the switch. Yes, they are both 60 miles at most away, but I don’t watch them… because I cannot get them on my box… until 2011.

  4. In regard to ION’s new television series the Guard, I have nothing but a series of questions to ask. What Coast Guard “base” is equipped with an air station, small boats, patrol boat, dive team and rescue swimmers all wrapped up in one pretty long haired hairy chested package? Not to mention the grooming standards of the so called unit Chief? As a spouse of an active duty Coast Guard Petty Officer, i am embaressed for the Canadian Coast Guard as well as the producers who would even entertain the idea of putting such a non-factual show on television. This a far cry from the Coast Guard and its duties. It is however a joke. In six years, I have never heard my husband get called to the “base” worst show ever.

  6. For one it is a TV show (albeit pretty cheesy acting). Canadian CG is a civil service not a military (much like our USPS). It has been 25 years since I had any interaction with the Canadian CG (when I was on the CGC Polar Sea and we had a couple of “long hair” CCG riders on board.) As far as CG bases having all that stuff San Diego has pretty much all that – dive team is nearby (MSST).

  7. I love the Guard. Steve Bacic is my favorite. But I wish you’d get his financial problem solved. It’s getting old. Did you change actresses for Laura’s part? It wasn’t the same girl this week. I don’t like the new one. She doesn’t fit. The other red head was better for the part.

  8. You haven’t seen the US NBC show called “Trauma,” have you? 😉
    It’s HORRID. :/
