Saving Money the DIY Way

Feb 10, 2009  •  Post A Comment

With the economy in the dumps, homeowners are looking for ways to spruce up their houses. That means it’s time to pull out the tools and tackle some do-it-yourself projects.
DIY Network is picking up the mood and pitching in with what it is calling Smart Money Makeover Week, beginning Monday.
The week features 50 top do-it-yourself projects for people on a budget.
“DIY Network has always been a top resource for do-it-yourselfers, but our 24/7 ‘how to’ philosophy is more relevant than ever. Our goal with this special programming event is to help viewers take control and make the right decisions about which project makes the most sense for their budget, how to choose the right materials and uncover which parts of the job they can tackle themselves,” said Kathleen Finch, general manager of DIY Network. “At such a crucial time, viewers need experts and content they can depend on, and DIY Network is a crucial resource for consumers who are willing to invest their time wisely and put their skills to the test.”
Amy Matthews, a licensed contractor and host of DIY’s “Sweat Equity” and “Bathroom Renovations,” will guide viewers through the five days of projects.
The week includes new episodes of “Yard Crashers” and “BATHtastic” as well as reruns of other top DIY series.
During Smart Money Makeover Week, DIY will be showing financially focused interstitials designed to help homeowners who are looking to improve and maintain their homes.
Homeowners doing their own projects can save serious money, the network says. Citing figures from Remodeling Magazine, the price of having a professional remodel a room is $48,398, while a remodel of an attic bedroom on DIY’s “Sweat Equity” cost just $28,443.
