Video: Producing on Spec a Thing of the Past?

New-media and traditional producers agree that they don’t want to create shows on spec anymore. That’s the word from the ground, as Daisy Whitney reports in this week’s New Media Minute. Distributors and studios such as Break Media, EQAL and Generate, in a sign of the times, say they won’t launch new shows until advertisers are behind them.
This episode of the New Media Minute also covers fair use, an increasingly important issue for new-media producers. If you want to keep your content out of the courts, here’s the three-pronged test.

  1. If no one creates shows on spec going forward, then the only new online video series in our forseeable future will probably originate from accidental pilots that have gone viral, which will be quite rare.

  2. Thank you so much for your outlook on Video: Producing on Spec a Thing of the Past? : In Depth : TVWeek – Television Industry news, TV ratings, analysis, celebrity event photos , I totally agree with you. It is great to see a fresh outlook on this and I look forward to more.
