NBC Greenlights ‘Sing-Off’

NBC is jumping back into the musical reality space, greenlighting the a capella competition series “The Sing-Off.”
Joel Gallen (“America’s Best Dance Crew”) and Outlaw Productions (“27 Dresses”) are behind the project, which will feature vocal-only groups competing for the chance to win a recording contract from Sony Music.
“This is a fantastic feel-good series that viewers of all ages can enjoy,” said Paul Telegdy, executive VP of alternative programming for NBC and Universal Media Studios. “To hear these singing groups recreate a popular song with only the sounds of their voices is truly amazing.”
NBC didn’t specify a premiere date for “Sing-Off,” but insiders said it’s unlikely to premiere before next season, ruling out a summer launch. The show will unfold over eight weeks.
Since Fox’s “American Idol” launched, numerous networks have tried their own take on singing competition series. None have succeeded, though Fox has had modest success with the karaoke-inspired “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.”
Joel Gallen, Deb Newmyer and Sam Weisman are executive producers off “The Sing-Off,” which comes from Outlaw and Sony Pictures Television.
