History said Wednesday it will be making its largest investment in programming ever in the 2009-10 season, and unveiled a lineup of new shows including one produced by a former arch-rival.
The cable network described its 12-part series “America: The Story of Us” as an epic look at the invention of America, linking events from the founding of Jamestown to 9/11. The series is being produced by former Discovery Channel President Jane Root’s production company Nutopia.
Other shows that have been greenlit by History include:
—“Pawning History,” looking at the only family-owned pawn shop in Las Vegas where three generations of men work together.
—“Madhouse” (working title), set at a quarter-mile racetrack in Winston-Salem, N.C., following a driving tradition that dates back to the moonshine runners.
—“Nostradamus Effect,” presenting prophesies and how they relate to global events.
—“Mysteryquest,” examining unexplained phenomena including the Bermuda Triangle and the lost city of Atlantis.
History also is going back to its roots in a modern way with “WWII in HD.” The network has preserved and restored thousands of hours of color archival footage in high-definition to show how World War II looked and sounded to the American who fought it.
History goes into the upfront having come off a record year in 2008 with adults 25-54 and adults 18-49. It claims to be the top non-sports, nonfiction network for men.
“It is critical that as a brand we continue to redefine what history means for a new generation, to broaden the boundaries of History,” said Nancy Dubuc, executive VP and general manager. “Our viewers come to us with a passion for knowledge as they search for their place in the world. History continues to stand out in the sea of choices, particularly in these challenging, history-making times, as the critical, authentic voice that viewers demand.”
