Steinbrenner Sued for $38 Million Over the Creation and Operation of YES Network; Suit Filed by the Ex-President of MSG Network

Aug 28, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has been sued over the creation and operation of the YES Network, Reuters reports.

YES stands for Yankees Entertainment and Sports. The person who filed the suit is Robert Gutkowski, a former president of the MSG Network and former president of Madison Square Garden Corp. Both of those entities are owned by Cablevision, under the direction of Chuck Dolan and his son Jim.

According to the report, "Gutkowski said he first came up with the idea for the network in 1996, six years before its debut. The MSG Network had held local broadcast and cable rights to Yankees games from 1989 to 2000, the lawsuit said."

Furthermore, Gutkowski, according Reuters report of the suit, claims that Steinbrenner "knowingly lied" when he promised him a chance to build and have a major role in running what would  the YES Network.

The suit claims damages of at least $38 million. Reuters says YES is worth $3 billion.

  1. Are you kidding me? So Bob Gutkowski is the only person in the world who has had a thought that the Yankees could support a cable channel? Pal, I came up with my own version of the X-Games and pitched it out to Nike and other sponsors, all the way back in 1992. Should I have sued ESPN? Oh, and Steinbrenner offered, wait “promised” you the job of running the network?
Bob, you have accomplished plenty in your career, financially as well as recognition wise. Give this up. What a joke.

  8. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
