TV—and Hollywood and Broadway—Loses a True Giant in the Business: Larry Gelbart, 81, who developed M*A*S*H for TV, Dies

Larry Gelbart, who developed M*A*S*H for TV, and who wrote the Emmy-winning "Barbarians at the Gate" TV movie for HBO, has died of cancer at age 81.

Gelbart also was nominated for Oscars for writing "Oh God" and co-writing "Tootsie."

Gelbart won Tony Awards for writing the books to the Broadway musical "City of Angels" and co-writing "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."
