Dear NBC: Please Tone Down the Hype on Conan

Jun 11, 2009  •  Post A Comment

OK, so TV MoJoe likes the Conan. And we’ve been pretty consistent in warning against reading too much into the overnight household ratings for the latenight daypart– both when "The Tonight Show" premiered strongly, and when "Late Show" rallied back last week.

It was no surprise, then, that O’Brien would end up trouncing Letterman when the final numbers came out. Good for Conan. And good for NBC, which actually did a great job launching the show from a marketing and PR point of view.

But then NBC this morning goes and puts out a release declaring "Conan the New King of Late Night."

Really, NBC? Really?

It’s one week, people. Lots will change. NBC insiders have said they plan to measure O’Brien’s success in years, not weeks or months.

So why set up O’Brien for mocking by declaring him the king of latenight, just eight days into his run? Why give CBS something to throw back in your face when the race tightens (and it will tighten)?

It’s a shame that, while the players have changed, the same silly "late night wars" mentality continues to persist in so many quarters.

To paraphrase the scholar Fergie: "NBC, you’re so 2000-and-late."

End of rant.

  1. Conan has no women writers. Does Dave?

  2. In our opinion, David Letterman’s sad comments on Sara Palin’s daughter and Flight Attendants crossed the line. We realize that this is a ‘comedy’ show but his remark on the ‘slutty’ look of “Stewardesses” and denigrating young women are quite enough for us.
We will vote with the channel selector. No more Letterman.

  3. Bet you loved it when Dave made fun of Bill and Hillary Clinton, wingnut moron.

  4. Yes, Dave has women writers as well as women producers. I just wish everyone would stop painting him with this broad stroke as some “Sexual pervert” that Sarah Palin is trying to push just because of some lame joke or two. If you look back at his a=career, there are plenty of stuff that will offend (Osama Bin laden -Oh, and death to America) you but it is what it is from a guy who is paid to tell jokes. On the other hand, he has done right by many people with his quiet charitable contributions and causes.

  5. We are fed up with NBC because of their left wing politics. I have programed all my TV’s to not allow NBC stations to show. Therefore we have totally discontinued watching NBC and will continue that until we hear that they are fair and balanced with the news. Right now you are in bed with Obama, our worst president ever. He is ruining our country.
Of course you don’t want too many people to believe that, you only want to blame everything on George W. Bush.
    Bye Bye NBC

  6. i bet the late late show would offend you every 5 seconds…no one is safe 0.0 but craig is awesome anyway.
    on to my comment:
the joke was intended for Bristol, and any moron could figure that out. I doubt half the people who heard about this even bothered to watch the monologue for themselves. he never said which daughter, just daughter, and since bristol has been the only one in the spot light, it was obvious who he was talking about. it’s just that the daughter at the game wasn’t bristol and they apparently didnt know that. Dave cleared things up on wednesday. this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion.
