‘Deadliest Catch’ Producers May Have Fudged Footage

Producers of the Discovery Channel’s “The Deadliest Catch” may have used clever editing and reshoots to dramatize the reality program, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The reality show’s fourth season premiere depicted a dangerous storm, with a big wave hitting a fishing boat, resulting in a flooded stateroom. Discovery Communications said that footage of the events was shot separately and stitched together for story continuity.

  1. Oh please, this is a story? It’s not like this is a Hollywood sound stage with 12 cameras recording a giant stunt. There are one or two cameras on board these very real ships as they battle real storms and real men are really injured or killed.
And The Hollywood Reporter is shocked — shocked! — that there’s editing going on?
Every documentary, every news clip, every interview — indeed every PRINT interview — involves a certain amount of editing. As a former print journalist, I can assure you that as long as the truth of an incident is maintained, and the editing is only used for clarity, most professionals see nothing wrong with it.
Is a giant wave floods the wheelhouse, that’s a real event. If that particular wave was not photographed in long-shot, but a second wave of equal impact was, could anyone but an absolute purist object? I don’t think so.
