Rumors of Time Warner-NBCU Merger

May 23, 2008  •  Post A Comment

A merger between Time Warner and NBC Universal is being considered, CNBC‘s Julia Boorstin reports. Time Warner’s divestment of Time Warner Cable will provide the company with the monetary means to purchase NBC Universal, the Web site says. NBC Universal doesn’t have a publishing division and Time Warner doesn’t have a broadcast network, the Web site notes.

  1. But why would Time Warner buy a large entertainment company if they can’t even manage the large entertainment company they’ve got?
The stock price of TWX is sinking to about $10 a share. They consolidated the two vastly different film units of Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema into one company. Ratings at HBO has been dipping. Over the past two years and the first quarter of this year, Cartoon Network’s ratings have dipped over 50% than in 2005. The CW (you know, the network Time Warner owns a 50% interest in?) may shut down after next season because it continues to be a disappointment, especially with CBS’s non-interest in the channel.
Plus, too many units with Time Warner and NBCU are analogous with each other. What’s the point?
I’d rather see Sony buying NBCU or Time Warner buying CBS, not Time Warner buying NBCU.
