Clooney Says No to Union Bickering

Jun 27, 2008  •  Post A Comment

George Clooney, saying that bickering between the Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA is counter-productive, declined to take sides between the unions as production on movies and TV shows grinds to a halt because of a looming strike by actors, Daily Variety reports. “What we can’t do is pit artist against artist, because the one thing you can be sure of is that stories about Jack Nicholson vs. Tom Hanks only strengthen the negotiating power of the AMPTP,” Clooney said in a letter Thursday. Clooney also suggested that the unions raise the dues on the highest earnng actors, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

  1. It is good to read of a fair and realistic observation of the SAG/AFTRA/AMPTP debacle.
Clooney speaks from a position of responsibility, caring and openness.
Something many in Hollywood do not understand.
Twenty-three years ago at the entrance to A&M Studios where dozens of the biggest names in the music world gathered to record “WE ARE THE WORLD”, a sign at the entrance read, “LEAVE YOUR EGO HERE”.
Perhaps, (as Clooney suggests between the lines), AMPTP, SAG, & AFTRA, should walk into one room with that as a context for finally negotiating in good faith.
If I’ve written it once, I’ve written it a hundred times, “Spred the Wealth”.
