HD Ads Get Spliced by Standard Sets

Jun 24, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Marketers are concerned that the move to digital television will cut off wider high-definition commercials, AdAge reports. The DTV transition will open more spectrum for high-definition programming, but many homes still have standard-definition TV sets that cannot support the wide-screen aspect ratio. That can result in letters and images on the left and right side of the screen being cut off, the newspaper says. So far, networks and marketers have only been able to come up with short-term solutions like “center cut protection,” which moves images and words towards the center of a commercial, or letterboxing, the newspaper notes.
