DirecTV would like to make more deals to save broadcast shows, as it has done with “Passions” and “Friday Night Lights,” in order to retain subscribers and attract new customers, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Eric Shanks, DirecTV’s executive VP of entertainment, said he would rather develop relationships with networks and studios to acquire their shows than develop original programming, the newspaper says. DirecTV will invest $12 million in “Friday Night Lights,” about 40% of its budget, in addition to marketing dollars, and in return the satellite provider will air the new season’s episodes before they are broadcast on NBC, the newspaper notes.
