FCC to Weigh in on Airwaves

Oct 10, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The FCC is expected to weigh in on the battle between tech companies like Google and broadcasters over soon-to-be unused airwaves in a report due out as early as today, Reuters reports. The FCC report will consider the feasibility of opening up “white space,” or unused airwaves, for unlicensed use once broadcasters move to digital television next year. Google, Microsoft and others want to use the space for the next generation of wireless devices but broadcasters, wireless phone companies and others oppose it over concerns that it would create interference and other technical problems, Reuters says.
