Conyers Leads Opposition to Gupta Appointment

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) is leading a campaign to reject Barack Obama’s expected nomination of CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta for surgeon general, TheHill.com reports. In a latter to colleagues Wednesday, Conyers expressed his concern on Gupta’s lack of “experience needed to oversee the federal agency,” the site says. TheHill.com points out that Conyers is friends with documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, who had an on-air dispute with Gupta on CNN’s “Larry King Live” in the wake of Moore’s film “Sicko.”

  1. The fact of the matter is that Larry King had both on air during the run up to the release of Sicko and Gupta carried some serious water for the traditional model for healthcare delivery, which leads many, including myself, to believe that he’ll do the same for Obama.
The allegations of faulty researching he presented to Moore in the segment of King’s show turned out to be completely wrong. Moore was right, Gupta defended the drug companies that advertise on Larry’s show, and I don’t believe there was ever a followup on CNN or a retraction.
So, Conyers has some standing here.
And c’mon, he’s a telegenic guy but I don’t want another bill of goods sold to me under the guise of health care reform that doesn’t work.
And that’s what I fear from Dr. Sanjay.
Hey, maybe not him. Maybe Sanjaya instead. We can pull him away from his job at The Gap.
