Cablevision Systems, which bought Newsday last year, says it plans to charge for reading the newspaper online, Reuters says. “Our goal was and is to use our electronic network assets and subscriber relationships to transform the way news is distributed,” Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge said on a conference call with analysts, according to the news service. “We plan to end the distribution of free Web content.”

  1. Well, coincidentally enough, I plan to end my visits to newsday.com. What is Cablevision thinking? Barely any newspapers charge for access (WSJ, does NYT even charge anymore – I’m always able to read articles I’m interested in). Newsday, while “Long Island’s” paper, is just a rag like the Daily News and NY Post. Good luck Cablevision – newspapers are already down the toilet. Newsday will now lead the way.
