MTV Shutting Down Its Time Square Studio, A Rock ‘N’ Roll and Hip-Hop Landmark to Many

Aug 11, 2009  •  Post A Comment

MTV didn’t renew the lease on its glass-fronted studio overlooking New York’s Times Square and the space will revert to the landlord at the end of the year, the New York Post reports.

The network opened the space 12 years ago for its audience participation show TRL, which became very popular and made a star of its host, Carson Daly. The crowds of screaming teens it drew to the street below helped in the transformation of Times Square from seedy to tourist-friendly.

The network declined to comment.

  1. MTV is probably abandoning their studio in their continued effort to cut all ties to anything at all related to “music.”

  2. @Bill : I AGREEE.
& as mtv continues to SUCK I think we should all petition the FCC force them 2 change their channel name. The channel is beyond horrible.

  3. The Federal Communications Commission has little, if any, control over cable channels such as MTV, VH1, Discovery, etc. The FCC was established to watch over broadcast channels – your local radio and television stations. If the local stations don’t tow the line, they lose their license to broadcast. License renewals come up every five years, I believe.
I agree that MTV has lost it’s focus, but it’s like “Ice Road Truckers” on History and “High School Reunion” on TV Land. Cable channels need to get back to their roots.
