Survey Says Not Everyone on the Internet After All

Feb 16, 2010  •  Post A Comment

In a National Telecommunications & Information Administration survey of 50,000 people, 30% of the respondents said they are not using the Internet either at home or on the job, according to B&C.

The data, commissioned by the NTIA through the Census Bureau, shows that the poor, seniors and minorities continue to lag behind other groups in adoption, B&C said. It also shows that broadband adoption is up from 2007, from 51% of all households to 64%.

  1. Yes, and some people still slow down the grocery line using their 1980s-style checkbook! Jeez, it’s 2010. If you can’t afford a home connection, at least visit the free public library once a month to read your free e-mail account. Or is “free” too expensive? I’m sure someone could help you with this confusing new world we live in.

  2. Doug – Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to be old some day. My Mom doesn’t know how to use a computer and doesn’t care to learn. It’s not because she can’t afford it. When people get older maybe they just don’t want to be bothered with trying to keep up. Maybe you’ll feel the same way about new technology when you’re in your 80’s. Marketers need to keep this in mind. These people still buy things and contribute to society.

  3. I have tried to teach my mother-in-law (who I dearly love) about computers and the internet. She is in her 70s and just doesn’t get it. She IS doing email occasionally, which is a small victory!

  4. The internet isn’t everything. It isn’t necessary for every human activity to have an online equivalent.
Not reported here is the number of people who simply don’t need or use the internet and who are not ” poor, seniors and minorities”.
There are other things in life.

  5. And BTW, before I’m accused of being a luddite, I have six computers, including two laptops.

  6. Doug, get offline much?
Take yer new-fangled contraptions and internets back to your parent’s basement and leave those not wanting part of it alone.

  7. John-so what’s wrong with being a Luddite? 🙂 I’m overwhelmed by technology at work and can’t wait to retire to get away from it all. I want to go fishing, sailing, climbing…all the stuff that, because of technology (my job), I don’t have time for right now. And BTW, I also have several computers at home and my 81-year-old dad is online, though my mom couldn’t be less interested. I promise, I will GREATLY reduce my online time when I no longer am forced to use it.

  8. John, I agree w/your 1st post, and identify w/your 2nd. Robbie

  9. I am extremely impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it’s rare to see a nice blog like this one these days.. 🙂
