No More Emmy Awards for TV Theme Songs

Apr 20, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Cue the sad trombones. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has said it’s nixing the Emmy award for main title theme song for television shows, TVbytheNumbers.com reports.

It’s a nod to the fact that the TV show theme song has "mostly gone the way of the dodo," the article says. Theme songs explicitly written for television shows have created some great pop culture, such as the "Green Acres" theme song or the "Gilligan’s Island" ditty.

But Variety reports that "the music peer group executive committee is still mulling other ways to honor main title themes (which will be awarded this year).[Note: Variety is behind a fire wall and myay charge you to read this story.]

It appears the category will be replaced in 2011 by a new "music composition for a nonfiction program" award," although that’s still under discussion, the Variety article says.

Since we never miss a chance to sing the "Green Acres" theme song–it appears that we have that in common with Bill Gorman of TVbytheNumbers–we ask that you join us in singing it now (A tip of the TVWeek cap to the late Vic Mizzy, who wrote the themes to both  "Green Acres" and "The Addams Family"):

Green acres is the place for me.
Farm livin’ is the life for me.
Land spreadin’ out so far and wide
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

New York is where I’d rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

…The chores.
…The stores.
…Fresh air.
…Times Square

You are my wife.
Good bye, city life.
Green Acres we are there.
