Matt Lauer is denying a report that he’s split with his wife Annette, calling the story "a work of fiction," People.com reports.
"I am living in my apartment with Annette and my children as a family and a couple," Lauer told the publication. Lauer spoke to People from France, where he’s been hosting "Today" from the Cannes Film Festival. Laurer also told People, "I have never moved out. I am not moving out. There is no truth to that."
As previously reported, the National Enquirer reported a story that Lauer’s marriage had broken up because of his infidelity.
In that report yesterday, we linked to an account of the Enquirer story in the New York Daily News. That story, by the Daily News’ Christina Everett, made it appear that the Daily News had an unnamed source that basically confirmed the Enquirer’s report.
However, this morning Everett updated her story with Lauer’s denial. Disappearing from the updated story was the confirmation from the Daily News’ unnamed source.
So I called Everett asking her why it disappeared. She said that the Daily News never had a source, unnamed or otherwise, confirming the Enquirer story. I told her that her story definitely made it sound as if the Daily News had a source confirming the Enquirer piece. (In fact, two of us here at TV Week had carefully read the Daily News story yesterday a number of times.) I then asked Everett if she could read me exactly what she wrote in yesterday’s story, since it was no longer posted on the Daily News site.
Everett said she did not have access to it anymore either. She said if she had made it sound as if the Daily News was confirming the story, she was sorry anyone got that impression. All the information she wrote in her story yesterday, she said, was taken from the Enquirer’s report. I then asked if I could talk to her editor. She said she was the editor, and that her stories are only read by copy editors before they are published.
