‘Dora the Explorer’ Takes an Odd Turn as Character Turns up in Immigration Battle

As "Dora the Explorer" nears 10 years on the air, the bilingual cartoon star is turning up in an odd situation: as the target of anti-immigrant feelings, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Dora, who teaches young children phrases in Spanish as she and her sidekick monkey solve problems, turned up in several doctored mug shots earlier this year, the story says. One pictured a beat-up looking Dora accused of illegally crossing into the U.S. and was circulated after Arizona passed its controversial immigration law, the article adds.

"There’s a part of me that’s almost like her mom," co-creator Valerie Walsh Valdes says. "I said, ‘Why would they drag her into this?’ It seemed totally inappropriate." But for most people, she’s an example of how it’s cool to be multicultural, the article adds. She’s also big business: The show has generated more than $11 billion in retail sales, according to an estimate from Nickelodeon.
