Why Does Bill Maher Think He’ll Never Win an Emmy? Hint: It Has to Do the (Lack of a?) Big Guy Up There

Sep 14, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s "Real Time With Bill Maher," tells The Hollywood Reporter why he believes he’ll never win an Emmy: his lack of religious belief.

Maher, an atheist, says, "A panel of like 10 people watches one tape. If half of those people are religious, that probably eliminates me right there. A lot of people wouldn’t vote for such an outspoken atheist."

He adds that he doesn’t believe writer Christopher Hitchens, another outspoken atheist, will make a deathbed conversion "because I don’t think he’s going to die." He added, "He’s not a fearful guy, so it’s not going to happen."

  1. Bill Maher is best remembered for praising the bravery of the 9/11 suicide-bombers. What a no-talent jerk.

  2. I must have missed that controversy.
Considering his beliefs, it is a surprising comment. While I can see that some people might take things that way, I don’t recognize an inherent connection between courage or bravery, and the irrational behavior of religious fanatics.
Standing up in the face of overwhelming opposition (i.e., being willing to die for your beliefs) is one thing. Killing people for your religious beliefs is another thing entirely.
Bill doesn’t appear to understand the difference.

  3. Maybe he won’t get an Emmy because he has no talent.

  4. He is an insensitive, mean-spirited, no talent jerk. I can’t believe anyone employs or watches him. I canceled HBO because they promote him. I get my movies from Showtime and Netflix and am quite happy.

  5. Come on – he didn’t praise them, let that myth go already.
    Moving on –
I think his humor is quite cutting.
He knows his own mind and he’s not afraid to speak it and he doesn’t a-kiss anyone to get something or be popular. It just so happens a lot of people agree with him, and that’s why they like him. He can articulate things in a way they can’t.
Yes, he can be quite mean-spirited from time to time, but nobody’s perfect.
I’m sorry but I like to hear smart people speak from time to time – it’s such a rarity these days.
    xoxo.
