Comcast and independent network Tennis Channel said that they would prepare for an administrative trial after failing to resolve their dispute over channel position through mediation, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog.
Tennis Channel wants a foothold on Comcast’s line-up that would give it more subscribers, as the cable giant currently offers the network as part of a package of sports channels, instead of as part of the basic service package. Tennis Channel has argued that this puts it at an unfair advantage, given that Comcast’s own Golf Channel and Versus are on the basic tier and available to all of Comcast’s customers, and has asked the Federal Communications Commission to intervene, the story notes.
The failure to mediate their dispute comes at a delicate time for Comcast, since it’s waiting for the FCC to approve its merger with NBC Universal and critics have argued that the deal would give Comcast too much power to favor its own content at the expense of smaller networks, the story adds.
one more example of how Comcast will leverage NBC and all of its sports deals against competitors. It will be very nasty.
