Former Star Says Popular Reality Show Was Scripted, With Conflict Designed to Get Ratings

One of the former stars of a popular reality show is now saying that "almost all" of the show was scripted, reports Fancast.com.

Kristin Cavallari, who was featured in MTV’s "The Hills," was asked about the negative way she was portrayed on the show, and responded, "All that was to get ratings.”

"There was one producer in particular who was behind all that," she said, without naming the producer. She added that it "was one of the hardest things I ever had to go through."

She said that when she watched the first episode of "Laguna Beach," where she appeared before she became a cast member on the spinoff “The Hills,” "I locked myself in the bathroom and was crying for hours because I was so upset about how they were portraying me. But that’s why going into ‘The Hills,’ I knew exactly what I was getting into."

She added that she was a willing participant on "The Hills," saying she told the producers, "’Whatever you guys want me to do, I’ll do. Don’t mess with me. I’ll be a participant.’ They’re very shady with you."

  1. Seriously, is anybody surprised to learn that a “reality” show was scripted?

  2. The question is which reality show isn’t scripted.
Sure, The Hills and Laguna Beach may have had actual scripts (really, didn’t the reveal that it was all shot on a set in the last episode stop this from being news?)
More importantly, all other reality shows are “scripted” in the sense that drama is created, enhanced and minimized through very, very creative editing. I know people who have been featured on a reality series and their personal copy of raw footage shows how different the shows actually are from true reality.
The bottom line is the shows are still entertainment, and when it comes down to truth or telling a good story, the story will win, every time.

  3. Isnt everyone just a little tired of the Reality BS and the making of stars out of no talent. I don’t really find it very entertaining. Can we go back to featuring real talent actors and real talent writers?

  4. Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!

  5. Reality shows are scripted? NOOOOO!!!! I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore!

  6. In other news, water is wet.

  7. What ever happened to working one’s way up in Hollywood? I don’t know any successful actors and actresses who paid their dues by starring in reality shows. They worked their way up from starring in crappier films, whatnot.
If you’re interested in becoming an actor, then fine, go for it. Why play yourself on a tv show, but turn up the drama? Of course, some people will think that you’re injecting your own personality into what’s happening.
I have to laugh when these reality show nitwits whine about being “misrepresented.”
