A top executive at the Fox News Channel has been fired by Roger Ailes for what the news company called “issues relating to financial irregularities, as well as for multiple, material and significant breaches of his employment contract," reports Bill Carter in The New York Times.

Brian Lewis was fired July 25 after serving as executive vice president of corporate communications for Fox News. The news shocked many in the cable news industry, the story adds.

Although Lewis had once been a close adviser to Ailes, his relationship with his boss had reportedly soured within the past year or so, Carter writes.

No other details were given, although Carter adds that Ailes is said to be working on a settlement with Lewis, who didn’t respond to phone messages. Fox News said it had made the decision "after an extensive internal investigation of Brian Lewis’ conduct.”

Lewis joined Fox News in April 1996, just months before the channel debuted, notes The Hollywood Reporter.

THR adds: "Insiders say that their close relationship made it difficult for Ailes to cut Lewis loose, but the financial issues his actions raised — details of which were not available Tuesday — coupled with complaints about complacency and other matters, left Ailes feeling as if he had no other choice."
