Prime-Time and Late-Night Personality Joins NBC’s ‘Today’ Show

A TV personality who is a familiar face in late-night is joining the team on a show at the other end of the daily programming cycle, NBC’s "Today" show. USA Today quotes "Today’s" Matt Lauer saying Carson Daly is "officially joining our family."

Daly has previously filled in on the show and has made a number of appearances during the past several months, the piece notes.

"Daly, 40, who is the host of ‘The Voice’ and ‘Last Call with Carson Daly,’ acknowledged that people ‘associate me with nighttime, but I’m really a morning person,’ he said," the story reports.

Daly added: "This feel likes a new era of ‘Today.’"

Daly will launch a new feature on the show, "The Orange Room," focused on social media. "I’ll be your digital doorman," Daly said.

Daly, who formerly hosted "TRL," called the "Today" show "’TRL’ for grownups," adding: "I feel like I’ve been adopted by the first family."

"Sitting with Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Hoda Kotb, Willie Geist and Kathie Lee Gifford (who were all squeezed in on a couch), Daly cracked, ‘This feels like an intervention,’" the story reports.

Daly noted that he plans to continue his weekly radio show, but he did not comment on plans for his late-night show.

  1. Sorry, they are now the second family. And I don’t think adding Carson will increase those ratings to pass GMA.

  2. Tick, tock. The time is ticking away on Matt Lauer’s contract and I wonder if Carson is the next one in line to replace him?

  3. I have to agree and disagree.
Can Carson Daly bring in more female viewers of a younger demographic?
    Sure.
Depending on what they have him doing during the show. And this show needs a jolt. Carson gives them a push.
    Is Carson Daly the answer?
Probably not in the long run. This show is constantly uncomfortable to watch and content given is extremely questionable along with the same old same old when it comes to talent and talking heads. If I see another story on the Royal family or the Royal baby I will puke.
    Today has become boring.
But Carson adds a fresh perspective which is clearly needed if NBC wants to be competitive in the morning.
A lot of work to do on Today. Looking forward to how they approach a serious ratings decline and Carson is a start.
