Twerking MTV’s Video Music Awards: Miley Cyrus Reveals Why She Did It

Sep 3, 2013  •  Post A Comment

Miley Cyrus has broken her silence about why she delivered her now-famous twerk-heavy performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards — a performance that got almost everyone talking, with many observers criticizing the former "Hannah Montana" star for her "all grown up now" act.

USA Today reports that Cyrus planned the whole thing — from her rump-twirling against Robin Thicke’s crotch to the suggestive foam finger to the ubiquitous protruding tongue — for that very reason: to get people talking.

"Her strategy worked," the report notes. "Her performance has become an MTV VMA ‘moment,’ like Britney Spears and Madonna before her. She also told Robin Thicke that they’re going to ‘make history.’ And they did. Her performance has surpassed Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance on Twitter for most tweets per minute."

Commenting last week on the fallout from the show, Cyrus is quoted as saying: "What’s amazing is I think now, we’re three days later and people are still talking about it. They’re overthinking it. You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me."

Cyrus noted that she’s not the first pop star to make noise at the VMAs. "Madonna’s done it. Britney’s done it. Every VMA performance, that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history," she said.

Cyrus dismissed those who found fault with the effort. "I don’t pay attention to the negative because I’ve seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?" she said.

  1. Nice dance moves, Miley. BTW, your song still sucks

  2. She says she wanted to make history. Well in my opinion, she made the top of the history list:
of the worst moment in TV history! Very sad to have to stoop that low and think it was “just me”.

  3. What a twit!
