Viewers Bailing Out on CNN’s New ‘Crossfire’

CNN apparently has an "uphill battle with viewers" with its reboot of "Crossfire," as the half-hour show saw its ratings plunge during its first week on air, The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports.

"Crossfire" debuted Sept. 9 with modest time-slot improvement, averaging 581,000 total viewers and 171,000 viewers in the target news demographic of adults 25-54. But by Friday, ratings had dropped 47% in total viewers and 40% in the demo, the report notes.

After the Monday premiere, "each of the subsequent four telecasts dropped double digits in both total viewers and the demo, before settling at 309,000 viewers and 103,000 adults 25-54 — the latter a loss of 40%," the story reports. "For the week, ‘Crossfire’ averaged 438,000 viewers and 147,000 adults 25-54. Those numbers are down roughly 10% from the time slot’s year-to-date average — and, among viewers, down 14% from the week before."

Meanwhile, competing shows on Fox News and MSNBC both saw ratings growth in what was a big news week including an address on Syria by President Obama. FNC’s "Special Report With Bret Baier" averaged 2.136 million total viewers and 368,000 viewers 25-54, the story reports.

The new "Crossfire" features a political debate panel made up of Newt Gingrich, Stephanie Cutter, Van Jones and S. E. Cupp.

  1. To bolster the ratings, perhaps a contest to see if anyone knows what the S.E. stands for in Ms. Cupp’s name (Sarah Elizabeth?)
