A new period drama is in the works that promises not just pretty scenery, but also "big ideas." The project is a 1960s Malibu surf drama from former "90210" showrunner Rebecca Sinclair.
Deadline.com reports that Sinclair has teamed with Carol Mendelsohn Productions on the project, which was bought by the CW.
The untitled project, described as "darkly comedic," will look at surf culture in Southern California, as well as the social changes rippling through America during the decade. Sinclair will write, executive produce and run the project.
"We wanted to tell a different kind of story about the ’60s, one that explored the real events that led to the birth of California’s surf culture,” Carol Mendelsohn said.
Sinclair added: "There’s a Trojan horse element to this show: We’ll lure the audience in with gorgeous beaches, girls in bikinis and hot shirtless guys but then leave them grappling with big ideas.”
