Cable News Channel to Add More Staff, Bureaus — as Distribution Also Expands

A fledgling cable news channel is mapping plans to expand its coverage and add programming, with the plans including adding employees and bureaus across the U.S. The channel, Al Jazeera America, which debuted on cable just two months ago, also will open a new headquarters in Manhattan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The growth plan is in response to the fact that "the channel has been so well received," Chief Executive Ehab Al Shihabi said in a memo to employees. "The critical acclaim, increased distribution and online interest in Al Jazeera America’s unbiased, objective and in-depth coverage of the news has convinced us that we should fast-track our plans to meet the projected increased demand."

The news outlet currently operates 12 U.S. news bureaus, but will add an unspecified number in the next year. The move is designed to allow the network to report stories that aren’t getting coverage on other news outlets. Al Jazeera America plans to emphasize investigative reporting, and will hire more reporters, the story says.

"There will be a new promotional and marketing campaign, especially in markets where the channel is just being launched or expanded," the report adds. "Last week, Al Jazeera America announced an agreement with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks to expand carriage, especially in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas."
