FXX Could Not Afford to Buy the Publicity It’s Getting From This: FXX Sued by Exxon Over Logo

"FXX is under fire from Exxon, which has filed suit against the cable network for its new logo, claiming it rips off the oil giant’s trademarked brand," reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker.

"Exxon says that causes confusion among consumers and makes it look as if FXX — which launched Sept. 2 and is the baby sibling to the established cable network FX, both part of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. — is affiliated with Exxon," the piece notes.

FXX told Variety that it was "unfathomable that a consumer would confuse Exxon’s logo, from the world’s largest oil and gas company, with FXX, the new networks that brings viewers such award-winning original television as ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ and ‘The League,’ to name a few."

The network added, "We are confident that viewers won’t tune into FXX looking for gas or motor oil and drivers won’t pull up to an Exxon pump station expecting to get ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.’”

  1. Exxon, why don’t you do something cleaver and partner with FXX and make fun of both yourselves. FXX could promote their cable schedule and Exxon, you might get younger, hipper gas customers. Voila! More viewers and more gas sold. You both win instead of tying up our courts with your childish, ridiculous lawsuit.

  2. If this is an actionable duplication of an existing logo, why hasn’t Walgreen’s sued the Washington Nationals?

  3. Exxon should watch what they’re doing. The French might decide to sue for debasing the Cross of Lorraine for commercial purposes.
