Glenn Beck attacked veteran NBC sportscaster Bob Costas, unleashing a verbal barrage after Costas aired a commentary that was critical of the Washington Redskins’ team name, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker.
During Sunday’s telecast of the NFL game between the Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys, Costas pointed out that many people would be offended if a team was named after a nickname for an ethnic group. "Ask yourself what the equivalent [of Redskins] would be if directed toward African Americans, Hispanics, Asians or members of any other ethnic group," he said.
Beck "unloaded" on Costas on Monday, the Times notes.
"You sanctimonious piece of crap," Beck said. He also called Costas "senile" and "wildly arrogant."
"Why is it that all white people think they have to correct all the ills and protect everybody else?" Beck asked.
The battle between Beck and Costas’ positions is part of a larger discussion about the team’s name, with President Obama saying that he would think about changing the name if he owned the franchise, the piece points out.
