A detective who became a household name thanks to books, movies and magazines will soon make an attempt at becoming a fixture on broadcast television. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that some industry veterans are bringing Philip Marlowe to ABC.

"’Castle’ creator Andrew Marlowe is bringing Raymond Chandler’s famed detective Philip Marlowe back to life," the story reports. "The showrunner behind the Nathan Fillion starrer is teaming with ‘Castle’ writer/consulting producer Terri Edda Miller and prolific producer Michael De Luca (‘The Social Network’) for an untitled Philip Marlowe drama set up at ABC with a script commitment."

Humphrey Bogart’s depiction of Marlowe in "The Big Sleep" in 1946 was just one high-profile appearance for the detective, who was also played on the big screen by Robert Mitchum, Elliott Gould, Dick Powell and George Sanders, among many others.

"The drama is described as a smart, sexy and stylish update of Chandler’s timeless character," THR reports. "It follows the investigations of the wisecracking, edgy and rugged private detective Philip Marlowe as he navigates the morally complicated world of today’s Los Angeles, where the California sun casts long and dangerous shadows and where true love can be more difficult to find than justice."

Andrew Marlowe and Miller, who are a married couple, will write the script and exec produce the project through their MilMar Pictures company for ABC Studios and Michael De Luca Productions, the piece notes.

  1. Wow. Chandler remains my favorite crime/noir writer, although the last of his seven novels was released over 50 years ago! I am actually reading what is considered the best biography of this literary innovator.
Marlowe back, a thrilling prospect – wish all involved the best.
Chuck and fellow readers, who would consider a good fit for this role?
