ABC has ordered a comedy project that will star an actress and comedian known for her work as a contributor to Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show" and her appearances on HBO’s "Flight of the Conchords."

Deadline.com reports that the network bought "American Monster," which will star Kristen Schaal. Schaal and her husband, former "Daily Show" writer Rich Blomquist, joined forces with writer-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on the project.

Schaal’s character is described in the report as "a small-town misfit who becomes an unlikely celebrity when she goes on trial for the murder of the century." Schaal and Blomquist will write the script, and will also executive produce along with Lord and Miller and Seth Cohen for 20th Century Fox TV and Lord Miller.

"This is the third sale for Lord Miller in the company’s first season under the exclusive three-year deal it inked with 20th TV in May," the report notes. "It also has two comedies at Fox, ‘The Last Man on Earth’ from Will Forte, which has a pilot production commitment, and ‘Torched’ from writer Chris Romano, which has a put pilot commitment.

Lord and Miller directed the pilot for Fox’s "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," the report notes.
