Anderson Cooper is in hot water after he mocked a contestant in last weekend’s Miss Universe competition during his CNN show "AC 360." TVNewser.com reports that Cooper mocked the costume worn by Miss Peru, Cindy Mejia, in the beauty pageant.

Cooper, during his "Ridiculist" segment on Wednesday, singled out the costume, noting, "What says Peru more than colorful flowers in what appears to be a plastic little old man baby on her shoulder wearing a hat.”

Peru’s media voiced outrage, with a number of outlets demanding an apology, the story reports.

"They say his joke didn’t recognize the fact that Miss Peru’s costume represents the country’s traditional cloth worn by Peruvian women from the Mantaro Valley," the piece notes.

The Huffington Post quotes Cooper saying: "Oh look, the man baby looks surprised! He’s got his little, little man baby hand right up there in front of his face like, ‘Oh! I’m a little–I’m a man baby from Peru."

The report adds: "’Can we see that again?’ Cooper insisted, unable to continue talking because of his unstoppable giggles."

The Huffington Post piece notes that "apparently people in Peru weren’t laughing. The Latino Daily News reported on Wednesday that nearly all of the daily papers in Peru are dominated with stories on the ‘audacity of CNN’s Anderson Cooper.’"

  1. “the country’s traditional cloth worn by Peruvian women from the Mantaro Valley”
Well apparently Peruvian women from the Mantaro Valley look ridiculous. I looked ridiculous in parachute pants in the ’80s.
If societal rules mandate that you have to maintain honor and respect for every culture’s proud traditions then we’d all have to admit that those Nazis were some sharp dressers.

  2. Nazi’s were not part of Germany’s proud cultural traditions and to make a statement like that is offensive to every German and to every Jew.

  3. But whatever you do…never…ever make fun of the twee Cooper.

  4. Please be sarcasm, please be sarcasm…
    That’s sarcasm, right? Gotta be.
