Careful, Google — This Is the Kind of Grass-Roots Effort That Could Grab the Attention of Legislators: Pissed-Off YouTube User’s Original Song ‘F— You Google+’ Goes Viral

There’s been a change made to YouTube that has angered some users. The popular video website, owned by Google, now requires anyone who wants to comment on a video to sign up to Google+.

In reaction, "Jawed Karim, one of YouTube’s original creators, took to the comments for the first time in eight years and asked, ‘Why the fuck do I need a Google+ account to comment on a video?,’ " reports TheVerge.com.

The story says it cannot verify whether Karim actually made the comment himself of whether his account was hacked, but what is clear is that a lot of YouTube users share the same feeling as expressed in the comment.

One of those users, Emily Blackery, has sung a song and posted it on YouTube. "My Thoughts on Google+" is filled with such lines as "Fuck you, Google+, your website can get fucked," and has gone viral with close to 700,000 hits as of 6 a.m. (PT) today, Monday, Nov. 11, 2013. The video was just posted last Friday, Nov. 8. You can watch her short video below. Warning: If you are offended by the word "fuck," you may want to skip it.

According to the website VentureBeat.com, Google "previously said it was making this change to produce more ‘meaningful conversations’ on YouTube, something it hasn’t been known for historically. Google’s logic was that it would be able to produce the kinds of quality conversations that happen on Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook."

However, another website, TheRegister in the United Kingdom, questions Google’s real reason for making the change: "Google+ requires users to have a public profile across Mountain View’s massive online estate to allow them to be tracked around the web for Google to better target ads for them."

TheRegister’s story continues, "An online petition has been signed by thousands of YouTubers who are unhappy with the switch."

As of this writing on Monday morning, the petition has more than 88,000 people who have signed it.

Here’s the video. Again, some users will likely find the language in it offensive.

  1. Boomerang effect: I watched this and wanted to break her ukelele. YouTube comments are unreadable thanks to trolls and Google should be thanked for cleaning up the mess.

  2. Personally, I got a kick out of this. No politician, this girl!

  3. She has a point. I don’t use Google+ I don’t care to use it becaise it sucks… Google first screwed us when they took away I-Google, now they’re messing with You Tube. They haven’t learned if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.. Google+ is the “new” coke for the 21st century.
