Disney Bursts SOAPnet’s Bubble

Disney is about to burst the bubble of the SOAPnet channel. The Los Angeles Times’ Company Town reports that the Walt Disney Co. is pulling the plug on the soap opera-focused cable channel at the end of this year.

Disney created the channel 14 years ago to get more mileage out of its daytime dramas, the report notes.

Three years ago, DIsney said it would fold SOAPnet to make room for Disney Junior, which targets toddlers. But because cable and satellite TV operators still wanted to provide soap operas to their customers, Disney continued to provide programming for both channels, the story says.

But Disney has recently told cable operators that it will stop programming SOAPnet after Dec. 31. Disney stopped charging distributors for the network several months ago, as programming tapered off and the channel started airing reruns of old shows such as "One Tree Hill," the piece notes.

Meanwhile, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger praised Disney Junior on a recent earnings call with analysts, noting that retail sales for related products more than doubled in fiscal 2013. The network is the top-rated TV outlet for preschoolers, the report adds.

  1. Can you tell me if SoapNet is really making the BIG MISTAKE of stopping airing Soap Operas?

  2. I am upset that y’all are getting rid of soapnet. I watch the other show that y’all air. Gilmore girls, Beverly Hills 90210, one tree hill, I don’t watch it for the soap operas : (

  3. I CANNOT believe you took away SoapNet!!!!!!! I work two jobs and being able to unwind with my favorite shows in the evening was a TRUE stress buster…now you take that from us!!!! What a disappointment!! Disney, as they say on Shark Tank, “I’m Out”!! I have had enough of Disney!!!

  4. I am very upset at losing Soapnet. 90210 was my favorite show. Also Veronica Mars. There are enough channels for kids to watch. They shouldn’t be watching too much tv anyway. There are no channels for soap operas. Please get them back. It was a great channel.

  5. This is bull put it back

  6. I am definitely not happy about Soapnet.com being taken away. It is one of the best shows on cable tv and provides viewers the opportunity to view programs they would otherwise miss. PLEASE keep soapnet.com available!
