A sports commentary on a newscast originally broadcast on Gannett’s WFAA-TV in Dallas has gone viral on the Internet, with almost 2 million views in three days.

The commentary is about football player Michael Sam, who recently came out as gay. If he becomes a player in the National Football League, as expected, he will be the first openly gay player in the NFL.

The commentary, below, is by WFAA sports anchor Dale Hansen. Hansen told The Huffington Post, via email, "I honestly didn’t think it was going to be that big a deal."

The Huffington Post adds, "When asked for his thought process on taking such a firm stance and then broadcasting it, Hansen responded thus: ‘I write only what I believe — and I simply believe what I wrote. Seems like common sense to me — nothing more or less.’"

  1. Thanks to WFAA’s Dale Hansen for his refreshingly open mind and making the world a better place!

  2. This has restored my faith in the non-Austin parts of Texas.

  3. Dale is one of the good ones on the DFW broadcasting scene.. he’s a caring guy who supports so many good programs in the area, and he’s not afraid to peak his mind.
