An actor known for his role in the feature film "Avatar" has been cast in "Salem." Deadline.com reports that the WGN America series added Stephen Lang, who played Colonel Miles Quaritch in "Avatar."

In the drama, which explores the 17th century witch hunts of Massachusetts, Lang will portray Increase Mather, a Puritan who is the country’s most influential and feared man, the story notes.

“Stephen Lang is a tremendous actor armed with an almost frightening knowledge of history and psychology — perfect for our twisted ‘Salem,’ where Increase Mather is a man driven to monstrous deeds by the intensity of his convictions; and a loving father who torments his son precisely out of love,”  co-creators, executive producers and writers Brannon Braga and Adam Simon said in a statement.

Among Lang’s previous roles, he also played Commander Nathaniel Taylor in Fox’s “Terra Nova.”
