Just days after Oprah Winfrey’s OWN announced it was making a docuseries about gay football player Michael Sam, the network has put the project on hold, reports Deadline.com.

“After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, ‘The Untitled Michael Sam Project’ has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team,” the network said.

The project had drawn a mixed reaction, while the NFL said it didn’t know about the show before the draft. Sam was to be followed by cameras as he sought a spot on the team.

Sam’s agent said the decision to postpone the project “will allow for Michael to have a total focus on football, and will ensure no distractions to his teammates. Everybody involved remains committed to this project and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message.”
