Conference Playoff Game Draws Record Ratings. (And We’re Not Talking About the NBA)

The New York Times, quite correctly, called it the "Game 7 of a series for the ages." The paper also enthused, 'It was the culmination of a series as hard fought as it was highly skilled."

It was the seventh game of the Westen Conference championship of the National Hockey League.

It featured the Los Angeles Kings, who had won the NHL league championship — commonly referrred to as the Stanley Cup — two years ago, and the Chicago Blackhawks, who won it last year.

With the series tied 3-3, game seven was played Sunday night in Chicago, and the Los Angeles Kings won in overtime, 5-4.

The game "was the most-watched NHL game ever on NBC’s cable sports outlet, the NBC Sports Network," reports Deadline.com.

The story continues, noting that the game "drew a 3.17 overnight rating; that’s the best for any NHL game in the network’s 2 1/2-year history, topping Game 3 of last year’s Cup Final. It also pulled a ridiculous 22.7 HH rating in Chicago but only a 4.8 in LA. Both were high-water marks for the NHL on NBCSN."

The Kings now meet the New York Rangers for the NHL championship. The two teams have never met in the Stanley Cup Finals before. The Rangers have been part of the NHL since 1926, but have only won the Stanley Cup four times, the last time being for the 1993-94 season.

The Kings joined the NHL in 1967, and the team's only Stanley Cup championship was the one they won in 2012.

If you live in L.A. and haven't been watching hockey on TV, this would be a good time to start. Here's the TV schedule for the NHL finals, per Deadline:

Game 2: 4 pm Saturday, June 7; NBC

*Game 5: 5 pm Friday, June 13; NBC
*Game 6: 5 pm Monday, June 16; NBC
